On the occasion of the Eighth Italian Research Day in the World, the round table “Uzbekistan and Italy: New Horizons for Scientific Cooperation” was held in Samarkand on April 25. The event, during which several cooperation agreements between Italian and Uzbek universities were signed, was chaired by the Uzbek Minister of Higher Education, Kongratbay Sharipov, and the Ambassador of Italy to Uzbekistan, H.E. Piergabriele Papadia de Bottini.
The meeting was attended by seventeen Uzbek universities and a delegation from seven Italian universities: Università della Tuscia, Roma Tre University, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, University of Trento, University of Pisa, University of Insubria, and the University for Foreigners of Perugia.
During the event, two major initiatives were announced: the opening of a new branch of the Faculty of Agriculture of Università della Tuscia in Samarkand and the establishment of a Faculty of Law of Roma Tre University in Tashkent. Furthermore, a new course dedicated to teaching the Italian language will be launched in Uzbekistan, developed in collaboration with the University for Foreigners of Perugia.
In addition to academic representatives, the round table was attended by prominent institutional and diplomatic figures, including the Uzbek Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Alisher Shukurov, and the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Italy, H.E. Abat Fayzullaev. CIUZ Vice President Marco Farci also participated as a ministerial adviser, giving an interview to the Uzbek national television on the sidelines of the event.
The Samarkand round table represents another step forward in strengthening academic cooperation between Italy and Uzbekistan, following the important mission of Italian university rectors led by Minister Anna Maria Bernini in September 2024.
It is worth recalling that, over the past two years, more than 100 Uzbek university lecturers have completed training and professional development programs at Italian universities, while over 700 students in Uzbekistan are currently studying the Italian language. To date, more than 50 agreements have been signed between higher education institutions of the two countries, confirming a solid, dynamic, and constantly growing academic collaboration.
