The latest data recorded by the National Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan show an increase in the number of tourist arrivals from Italy to Uzbekistan. In the first five months of 2025, approximately 17,400 Italian citizens visited the Central Asian country, of whom 16,400 traveled for tourism purposes. This represents an increase of about 13.5% compared to the January–May period of 2024. According to the national statistics body, Italy ranks among the top 10 countries by number of tourists to Uzbekistan in the first four months of 2025.
These numbers reflect the growing interest of Italian travelers in Uzbekistan, its history, and its culture, supported by a particularly advantageous visa-free regime for Italian passport holders. Another key factor contributing to the growth of Italian tourism to the country of Tamerlane is the development of transport and infrastructure in the sector. In this regard, at the beginning of August, a project for the construction of a new international airport in the Tashkent Region was presented to President Mirziyoyev, along with several proposals for improving domestic land transport, particularly the high-speed rail network.
Additionally, there has been increased accessibility to tourist services in the Italian language, thanks to the expansion of Italian language instruction and the training of local Italian-speaking guides.
In a context in which diplomatic and trade relations between the two countries are also experiencing a particularly fruitful phase, tourism remains an important component of institutional dialogue. During the first Lombardy–Samarkand Interregional Forum, representatives from SEA Milan Airports were also part of the Lombard delegation, and the desire to strengthen air connections between the two regions—by introducing direct flights between Milan and Samarkand—was reiterated several times. Guido Guidesi, Lombardy Region’s Minister for Economic Development, also emphasized during bilateral meetings that cooperation in the tourism sector is one of the areas with the greatest potential for strengthening bilateral economic relations.
