On Wednesday, 24 June, the annual gathering for CIUZ Members and Board Advisors took place. On the occasion of the celebrations of St. John the Baptist in Florence, we were welcomed at the Honorary Consulate of Uzbekistan by Consul Leonardo Comucci for a lunch and a cultural afternoon dedicated to Uzbekistan.
We had the pleasure of once again hosting a presentation of the novel “Anche se proibito” by Giulio Ravizza, which recounts the extraordinary story of Igor Savitsky. A Soviet artist and collector, Savitsky saved countless avant‑garde works from censorship—today exhibited at the State Museum of Karakalpakstan in Nukus, which he directed for twenty years until his death in 1984.
Before the novel’s release in 2024, these works arrived in Italy on loan and were displayed in two exhibitions linked to Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and Palazzo Pitti in Florence. At that time, CIUZ held its annual gathering in Florence, including a visit to the exhibition of the remarkable “desert avant‑gardes”. Two years later, we are pleased to continue promoting this treasure preserved in Uzbekistan, beyond the most travelled paths of the Silk Road.
